The Caprice Violin

The Caprice Violin

About our 'Caprice' violins

Ideal for an advanced violinist, this instrument was hand-made in a small, skilled workshop in China, where traditional techniques and careful wood selection are prioritised. We personally select each instrument for its tonal quality and structural integrity, then bring it to our Edinburgh workshop for a full setup.

Our luthiers make the bridge and soundpost to our Head of Workshop's standards, and then adjust the fingerboard, nut, and pegs to ensure optimal playability, comfort, and response, making sure that the instrument meets the demands of serious study and performance. The result is a violin that supports expressive playing and inspires musical growth.

About the violin

This violin was made in a small Chinese workshop in 2024 using European wood. It is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The violin has a one piece back of attractive flamed maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is a shaded golden-amber in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 355 mm.

How does it sound?

These violins are named 'Caprice' after the famously challenging pieces by Niccolò Paganini. We chose this name as they've been set up to offer a reliable instrument for very advanced repertoire. The set up prioritises an even, balanced tone with a good balance of tonal colour and projection.
