7/8th size violin by the Collin-Mézin workshop, Mirecourt, circa 1900

7/8th size violin by the Collin-Mézin workshop, Mirecourt, circa 1900

About the Collin-Mézin workshop

The Collin-Mézin workshop was a large, inter-generational business which was established in Paris by Charles Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin in the second half of the 19th century. In addition to being a luthier of exceptional quality, Collin-Mézin was a gifted marketer who was able to harness the star power of famous musicians to market his instruments and create a name for the workshop.

Collin-Mézin's son inherited the workshop upon his father's death in 1923, moving the business to Mirecourt two years later. In that town he established a much larger, more commercial business. This was in turn inherited by his own son, Charles Jean-Baptiste Collin-Mézin III. This continuation of the family trade means that there are large numbers of instruments from the Collin-Mézin workshop all around the world today.

About the violin

This violin was made in the Collin-Mézin workshop in Mirecourt, around 1900. The violin is made on the characteristically broad Mirecourt Strad model of the period.

The violin has a two-piece back of highly-figured maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is a rich reddish-brown in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 349 mm. The string length is 311 mm, making it a very comfortable 7/8th size.

How does it sound?

This violin is exactly what we're looking for in a 7/8ths instrument: only the comfortable feel in the hand gives away its smaller size! It's powerful and projecting, with a rich voice.

Condition

The violin is in excellent condition.
