About William John
London-born violin maker William John began his career at Ealing Strings, aged just 16. He spent 14 years in that workshop, restoring and studying fine Italian instruments, before setting up his own workshop in 1991.
William's work is much sought-after, and the consistently excellent quality of his instruments reflects a lifetime of experience studying, restoring and making fine violins.
About the violin
This violin was made in London in 2008 and is modelled after the later instruments of Guarneri 'del Gesù'.
The violin has a two-piece back of quarter-sawn maple, the flame descending to the centre joint. The ribs are of similar wood and the scroll is of slightly broader flame. The front is two pieces of narrow-grained spruce and the varnish is golden-brown in colour.
The violin has a length of back of 353 mm.
How does it sound?
This is a rich, full-blooded Guarneri model with huge reserves of character! Even at the loudest dynamics, the tone never loses its breadth.
Condition
The violin is in excellent original condition and retains its original bridge.
