Violin for Beare and Son, Markneukirchen, 1914
About Beare and Son
This violin was made to be sold by the London firm John and Arthur Beare. The company imported instruments from both France and Germany, offering instruments at a range of grades. The name Beare is synonymous with high quality: many of the world’s finest violins have passed through the Beare workshop at some point in their history!
About the violin
This violin was made in Markneukirchen and then went to Paris to be improved by Paul Serdet for the Beare company. This work included some finishing details to woodwork, as well as varnishing the instrument. The violin then travelled to London for sale in the firm's Soho shop.
The violin has a two-piece back of narrow-flamed maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is a shaded golden-brown in colour.
The violin has a length of back of 358 mm.
How does it sound?
This violin is hugely responsive and projects very well: it would be a superb instrument for exploring the big concerto repertoire.
Condition
The violin is in excellent condition.
