 Linus Andersson Viola da Gamba

About Linus Andersson

Linus is a Swedish/ German violin maker based in Glasgow. He studied at the Newark School of Violin Making, graduating with distinction. Following a period spent in the workshops of several important European makers, Linus now has his own workshop in Glasgow.

About the period instruments

This bass viol is a seven string model. The French viol player, Jean de Sainte-Colombe pioneered this extra string (a low A) and this instrument is reminiscent in style and form to the instruments of Frenchman Nicolas Bertrand, widely considered the greatest French viol maker.

The string length is 69 centimetres. The lower bout is 380 mm, the middle is 218 mm and the upper bout is 314 mm. The viol is un-antiqued and has a yellow golden varnish applied throughout.

How does it sound?

In terms of tone, as a violinist, I am somewhat unqualified to make too much comment, but the instrument has received high praise from a number of violists. It has good response and is easy to play.

Condition

The instrument is in original mint condition.
