About David Rattray
David Rattray has been active in making and restoring violin family instruments for some four decades, specialising in classical Italian copies. After more than 25 years as instrument curator at the Royal Academy of Music he relocated to Scotland in 2014, more recently accepting the role of strings consultant to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
He has been involved in a broad range of violin-related endeavours, from restoring and appraising antique instruments, lecturing and curating exhibitions, to the reconstruction of the Mary Rose fiddles and the copying of Paganini’s ‘Cannon’ Guarneri del Gesù, and as director of the Vivaldi Project – a Venetian-style baroque orchestra, the largest instrument commission of modern times. He is a member of the Ente Triennale Scientific Committee, Cremona and served as a jury member of the Antonio Stradivari International Violin Making Competition in 2009. David's instruments can be found in the hands of professional players across the UK and beyond.
About the viola
This viola was made in Fife in 2020 and is modelled after the instruments of the early Brescian maker Gasparo da Salò.
The viola has a two-piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs of similar wood. The scroll is of plainer maple and the front is two pieces of wide-grained spruce. The varnish is a lightly antiqued golden-brown.
The viola has a length of back of 16 and a half inches, or 419 mm.
How does it sound?
This is a true tenor viola with a reliable character. It has a good balance of response to resonance and projects well across the whole register.
Condition
The viola is in excellent original condition.
