Cello bow by Stephen Salchow, New York, circa 2005

About Stephen Salchow

Salchow was born into a great American bow dynasty: his father William was the first American to study bow making in France, working under both Georges Barjonnet and Charles Alfred Bazin. He then set up Salchow & Sons in 1960, with his son Stephen joining him in 1995. The business continues to thrive under the leadership of William's grandson Isaac.

Stephen is now based in Philadelphia, where he works for Frederick W. Oster Fine Violins.

About the cello bow

This cello bow was made whilst Salchow was still based in New York.

The round stick is of dark brown pernambuco and measures 695 mm in length. The mounts are of silver and ebony.

The bow weighs 82 grams.

How does it play?

This is a supremely nuanced bow. Although it has great power when needed, it is the subtle changes of sound that really make this bow appealing to play. Definitely the right bow for someone who enjoys searching out new sounds and thinking about new approaches to phrasing.

Condition

The bow is in good condition.
