Cello by the Rudolf Schuster workshop, Baiersdorf, 1989

Cello by the Rudolf Schuster workshop, Baiersdorf, 1989

About the Schuster family

The Schusters were an extremely large family of luthiers and bow makers based in Markneukirchen and in Luby in the Czech Republic.

After the Second World War, roughly 12,000 Germans were expelled from the area surrounding Luby, including members of the Schuster family. Some family members eventually settled in northern Bavaria, building successful workshops in Bubenreuth and Baiersdorf.

The family had excellent links with the United States: many instruments and bows bearing their name can be found in the U.S. today.

About the cello

This cello was made in Baiersdorf in 1989 and is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The cello has a two-piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of wide-grained spruce and the varnish is an unshaded reddish-amber in colour.

The cello has a length of back of 754 mm.

How does it sound?

This is an extremely resonant instrument with a big character! It works wonderfully as the bass voice in a texture and would add lots of body to a cello section or chamber ensemble.

Condition

The cello is in excellent condition.
