Cello made in Saxony, circa 1890

Cello made in Saxony, circa 1890

About Saxon cellos

This cello was made in Markneukirchen, a small town in the Saxony region of Germany famous for its great number of violin making workshops. Markneukirchen is less than 10km away from Luby, its Czech equivalent, leading to a great deal of crossover between the two places.

The town remains active as a centre of violin making today, with over 100 different instrument workshops and a charming museum dedicated to its extraordinary history.

About the cello

This cello was made in Markneukirchen around 1890 and is an interpretation of the 'del Gesù' model applied to the cello.

The cello has a two-piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of wide-grained spruce and the varnish is a shaded reddish-amber in colour.

The cello has a length of back of 759 mm.

How does it sound?

This is a warm, resonant instrument that has an attractively nutty lower register. It's well balanced and there's no loss of tonal quality on the inner strings.

Condition

The cello is in good condition.
