Viola by Rod Ward, Cambridge, 2013

About Roderick Ward

Rod Ward is a violin maker based in the village of Guilden Morden in Cambridgeshire. He has been crafting fine instruments since 1976, and his work is highly prized by both professional musicians and dedicated amateurs.

About the viola

This viola was made in Cambridge in 2013 and is the 105th instrument in Ward's output. It is modelled after the instruments of the Brescian maker Gasparo Bertolotti 'da Salò'.

The viola has a one piece back of attractively figured poplar. The ribs are of similar wood and the scroll is of maple. The front is two pieces of very wide-grained spruce with bear-claw figuration. The varnish is a dark amber in colour, laid over a golden ground.

The viola has a length of back of 15 and 15/16th inches, or 406 mm.

How does it sound?

This viola has a smooth, velvety voice. The A string is noticeably rich, never sacrificing quality of tone for volume.

Condition

The viola is in excellent condition, with minor wear to the varnish.
