Violin by Robert Walker, Hawick, 1899
About Robert Walker
Little can be found in our reference books regarding Robert Walker of Hawick. His biographical details match well with that of a master blacksmith living in Hawick at the time: certainly it was common in this era for skilled craftsmen to turn their hand to the art of luthiery.
The instrument is extremely well made: this was clearly not Walker's first instrument!
About the violin
This violin was made in Hawick in the Scottish Borders in 1899 and is built on a personal model.
The violin has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is amber in colour, laid over a golden ground.
The violin has a length of back of 357 mm.
How does it sound?
This is a powerful violin on the brighter end of the tonal spectrum. It's even and responsive, and it really loves to sing out!
Condition
The violin is in very good condition with some wear to the edgework.
