Violin made in Northern Germany, circa 1880

About the maker

This is such a wonderfully unusual model that it has taken us quite some time to research it! We can see the influence of both Tielke and Mariani, with various elements steering us towards it being an interesting Northern German violin.

Unfortunately, the maker is lost to history; it is our opinion that this violin was made just before the turn of the twentieth century, by a local maker who was influenced by the earlier Northern German luthiers.

About the violin

This violin is loosely inspired by the work of the early Hamburg maker Joachim Tielke. The violin has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs to match. The scroll is of plainer maple and the front is two pieces of very narrow-grained spruce. The varnish is an opaque shaded brown.

The violin has a length of back of 362 mm.

How does it sound?

This violin sounds every bit as interesting as it looks! It has a huge voice and rings brilliantly. It's rich, projecting, and operatic in its character.

Condition

The violin is in excellent condition.
