Violin bow by Nicolas Maline, Mirecourt, circa 1865

Violin bow by Nicolas Maline, Mirecourt, circa 1865

About Nicolas Maline

Nicolas Maline was born in 1822 into a remarkable Mirecourt family of luthiers, with six violin-making brothers and half-brothers, and two bow-making siblings! He likely served his apprenticeship with his father, specialising in bow making early in his career.

Maline may have worked for the Pajeot workshop in Mirecourt before beginning to make bows for J.B. Vuillaume in 1840. Bows made under his own name appear from around 1849, becoming increasingly prolific during the following decade. His finest bows combine exceptional workmanship with superb playing qualities, and are now highly prized by players and collectors alike.

About the violin bow

This bow was made in Mirecourt around 1865-1870 and is a very fine example of Maline's work.

The round stick is made of very attractive pernambuco and measures 729 mm in length. The mounts are of silver and ebony.

The bow weighs 62 grams.

How does it play?

Cliché as it sounds, this bow is truly an amazing all-rounder. The bow produces a full and rich sound, and has a great combination of strength and flexibility in the stick. It works equally well in Mozart as in Strauss and beyond.

Condition

The bow is in excellent condition. A UV condition report is available upon request.

Certification

The bow comes with the 2025 certificate of Cabinet Jean-François Raffin, as well as an insurance valuation by Pierre Guillaume. Excitingly, the bow is featured as an example of the master's work in Volume II of L'archet.
