Violin by Nicolas Caussin, Neufchâteau, circa 1860

Violin by Nicolas Caussin, Neufchâteau, circa 1860

About Nicolas Caussin

Nicolas Caussin was born in Rouvres-la-Chétive in 1818, the elder son of the violin maker François Caussin. He trained under his father, working in the latter's Neufchâteau workshop for a period before setting up his own workshop in Paris. This enterprise was short-lived: Caussin returned to Neufchâteau in 1857 and remained there until his death in 1889.

His brother François Hippolyte was also a fine luthier: the Caussin family are especially noted for their interpretations of the great Italian masters.

About the violin

This violin was made in Neufchâteau circa 1860 and is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The violin has a two-piece back of finely-flamed maple with ribs to match. The scroll is of medium-flamed maple and the front is two pieces of fine-grained spruce, widening towards the flanks. The varnish is golden brown in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 359 mm.

How does it sound?

This is a bright, vibrant violin with excellent clarity and projection. It would make an excellent orchestral instrument: it speaks easily, responds instantly, and is equally at home in Mozart 39 and Strauss tone poems!

Condition

The violin is in very good condition.

Certification

The violin comes with the certificate of Serge and Florent Boyer.
