About Neil Értz

Neil Értz was a Scottish violin maker based in Edinburgh who sadly passed away in 2016. Neil was one of the foremost British luthiers and was widely respected for his making and restoration. His instruments are much prized for their fantastic tone and beauty.

Born in Scotland in 1966, Értz studied the violin and viola at St Mary's Music School before going on to the Newark School of Violin Making. He then spent years gaining experience in some of Europe's most respected workshops before setting up his own, firstly in Cambridge and then in Edinburgh from 2009 onwards.

Neil's violin are are extremely popular: they are instruments which have a good deal of character, both tonally and visually.

About the violin

This violin was made in Edinburgh in 2014 and is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The violin has a one-piece back of quarter-sawn maple of narrow figure. The ribs and scroll are of similar wood with wider figure. The front is two pieces of book-matched spruce and the varnish is the shaded golden-amber characteristic of this period of Neil's work.

The violin has a length of back of 356 mm.

How does it sound?

This is an extremely successful instrument! It's capable of enormous dynamic contrast and can change character very quickly. The projection is excellent and the violin is very well balanced.

Condition

The violin is in excellent original condition.

The violin comes with the maker's receipt.
