Violin by Neil Kristóf Értz, Edinburgh, 2013
About Neil Értz
Neil Értz was a Scottish violin maker based in Edinburgh who sadly passed away in 2016. Neil was one of the foremost British luthiers and was widely respected for his making and restoration. His instruments are much prized for their fantastic tone and beauty.
Born in Scotland in 1966, Értz studied the violin and viola at St Mary's Music School before going on to the Newark School of Violin Making. He then spent years gaining experience in some of Europe's most respected workshops before setting up his own, firstly in Cambridge and then in Edinburgh from 2009 onwards.
Neil's violins are extremely popular: they are instruments which have a good deal of character, both tonally and visually.
About the violin
This violin was made in Edinburgh in 2013 and is modelled after the instruments of Guarneri 'del Gesù'.
The violin has a one-piece back of quarter-sawn maple, the flame descending from left to right. The ribs and scroll are of similar wood. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce which widen slightly towards the flanks. The varnish is the beautifully shaded golden-amber characteristic of Neil's later work.
The violin has a length of back of 351 mm.
How does it sound?
This violin is rich and dark, and plays very reliably. It seems to do anything that you ask of it - a supremely adaptable instrument!
Condition
The violin is in excellent condition.
