Cello by Mathias Neuner II, Mittenwald, 1810

Cello by Mathias Neuner II, Mittenwald, 1810

About Mathias Neuner II

The story of violin making in Mittenwald is dominated by great dynasties - families who passed on their skills from generation to generation. The Neuner family is an important part of this picture: at least 15 violin makers bore the Neuner name, and the family eventually joined forces with another prolific Mittenwald dynasty to form the influential Neuner & Hornsteiner firm.

Mathias II, born in 1762, was the son of violin merchant Johann Neuner. A skilled maker in his own right, he went on to become the first of Mittenwald's Verleger (merchant-manufacturers), employing a large number of luthiers and exporting instruments and parts as far as St. Petersburg.
