Viola by Marion Bennardo, Kirkcudbright, 2026

About Marion Bennardo

Marion Bennardo is a contemporary violin maker originally from the south of France and now based near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway. She trained at the prestigious Newark School of Violin Making and has nearly 20 years of experience in her craft.

A musician as well as a maker, Bennardo combines an interest in acoustics and engineering with a longstanding passion for woodcarving. Her instruments often feature distinctive decorative inlays, and her materials are all ethically sourced.

About the viola

This viola was made in Kirkcudbright in 2026 and is modelled after the 'Kievman' viola by the Brescian maker Gasparo Bertolotti 'da Salò' circa 1580.

The viola has a one-piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is an antiqued golden-brown in colour. The instrument is decorated in the manner of the early Brescian makers.

The viola has a length of back of 395 mm or 15 and a half inches.

How does it sound?

This is a very responsive instrument with great reserves of power. Don't be fooled by its manageable length of back: this is a viola with a big voice!

Condition

The viola is in original mint condition.
