Violin by Lawrence Cocker, Derby, 1962

Violin by Lawrence Cocker, Derby, 1962

About Lawrence Cocker

Cocker is perhaps best remembered for his split cane bows: these innovative bows consisted of a pernambuco head grafted onto a cheaper bamboo or cocobolo stick and were popular in the days before carbon fibre. His innovative nature also led him to work closely with Lionel Tertis on the famous Tertis model violas.

These interesting experiments aside, Cocker was also a very fine maker of instruments modelled after the Cremonese masters.

About the violin

This violin was made in Derby in 1962 and is a personal model which shows the influence of several classical Cremonese makers.

The violin has a two-piece back of quarter-sawn maple which ascends from the centre join. The ribs are of similar wood and the scroll is of plainer maple. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is an unshaded plum-red in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 355 mm.

How does it sound?

This violin has a particularly smooth voice. It's very even across the register, with a broad E string that seems like a continuation of the A. A very lyrical instrument with excellent projection.

Condition

The violin is in excellent condition.
