About Jonathan Hill
Jonathan trained at West Dean College in Sussex, focussing on early instruments. Following graduation, he worked in a number of European workshops before returning to teach at West Dean. He set up his own workshop in Edinburgh in 2022 and is well known for his exceptional work on early instruments.
About the violin
This violin was made in Edinburgh in 2025 and is modelled after the 'Maurin' Stradivari of 1718.
The violin has a two piece back of quarter sawn maple, the flame descending slightly from the centre joint. The ribs and scroll are of similar wood. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is a rich brown in colour, laid over a lighter golden ground.
The violin has a length of back of 357 mm.
How does it sound?
This is a hugely successful instrument which speaks easily and offers huge dynamic and tonal range. The tone is full and rich with excellent projection - it's easy but never boring!
Condition
The violin is in original mint condition.
