Violin by John Leyden, Glasgow, 1931

About John Leyden

John Leyden was born in 1869 and worked in two locations in Glasgow: Linthouse and Bishopbriggs. He made around 50 violins, working on classical Cremonese models.

About the violin

This violin was made in 1931 and is numbered 38 in Leyden's output. It is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The violin has a two-piece back of quarter-sawn maple, the flames descending from the centre joint. The ribs and scroll are of similar wood. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce, and the varnish is amber-brown in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 354 mm.

How does it sound?

This is a dark, projecting violin with a massive voice. It's immediately responsive and enormous fun to play!

Condition

The violin is in very good condition with some historic damage to the varnish, most likely from soot from a fire. This has been addressed in our workshop and the violin is guaranteed by us, as always.
