About Jean-Baptiste Salomon

One of the leading makers of the Vieux Paris school, Salomon was also a dealer in instruments and served as Master of the Paris Violin Makers' Guild. He was born in Reims to a violin maker father in 1713, and appears to have learnt his craft with his father.

He set up shop in Paris around 1740, enjoying great success as both a maker and a businessman until his death in 1767.

About the violin

This violin was made in Paris around 1750. The model is characteristic of the Vieux Paris school, combining the features of the Stainer model with some Amatise influences.

The violin a has two-piece back of highly-figured maple. The ribs and scroll are of slightly plainer maple, and the front is two pieces of finely-grained spruce. The varnish is golden-brown in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 356 mm.

How does it sound?

This is a rich, juicy violin with excellent projection. It rings very well and has a particularly pretty upper register. It is extremely responsive and a real pleasure to play!

Condition

The violin is in very good restored condition, having been comprehensively restored in order to prepare it for sale.

Certification

The violin comes with the 2022 certificate of Jean-Jacques Rampal.
