Viola by Hector MacMillan, South Queensferry, 1990

About Hector MacMillan

Hector MacMillan was a Scottish polymath: a playwright, author, and a luthier of considerable talent. He was particularly interested in the development of the viola model, writing a book on the subject. An Honorary President of the Scottish Society of Playwrights, an award for Best New Scottish Play was created in his memory after his death in 2018.

About the viola

This viola was made in South Queensferry in 1990 and the model demonstrates the influence of the Modern Italian maker Gaetano Sgarabotto.

The viola has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple, with ribs to match and a plainer scroll. The front is two pieces of wide-grained spruce and the varnish is amber in colour.

The viola has a length of back of 16 1/4 inches or 413 mm.

How does it sound?

This is an incredibly successful instrument! It's amazingly rich, responsive, and projecting: a real gem.

Condition

The viola is in excellent original condition.
