Viola by Harris & Sheldon, London, 2005

About Harris & Sheldon

Harris & Sheldon was the partnership between violin makers Nigel Harris, inventor of the Harris method, and Roger Sheldon. The pair focused on a physics-based approach to tonal development, and also on research in recreating classical Cremonese varnish.

The instruments that were made by the partnership are much celebrated for their consistent playing characteristics and beauty of varnish.

About the viola

This viola was made in London in 2005 and is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.

The viola has a two-piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of irregularly-grained spruce and the varnish is a shaded reddish-amber in colour, laid over a golden ground. The viola has a length of back of 15 and 3/4 inches, or 402 mm.

How does it sound?

This viola is true to the Harris & Sheldon approach: the sound is notably even across the register, with a clean, centred core. The response is quick and crisp, and the instrument is supremely reliable.

Condition

The viola is in excellent condition.
