Half size violin made for Jérôme Thibouville Lamy, Mirecourt, circa 1920

About J.T.L. instruments

The workshop of Jérôme Thibouville Lamy was based in Mirecourt and made a wide range of stringed instruments and bows. They were open for more than a century, closing their doors for the last time in 1969. The workshop was both large and prolific: examples of their work can be seen all around the world.

About the violin

This half size violin was made in Mirecourt for Jérôme Thibouville Lamy and is labelled 'M. Couturieux', one of their product lines. The violin is the characteristic Mirecourt interpretation of the Stradivari model.

The violin has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The one piece front is of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is reddish-brown in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 315 mm.

How does it sound?

This is a fantastic little violin: the kind of fractional instrument that you hope to find! It's bright but not thin, and has the power, response and sonority of a much larger instrument. If we didn't already have one, we'd probably keep it for our own son...

Condition

The violin is in excellent condition with some wear to the varnish.
