About Saxon violin bows

This violin bow was made in Markneukirchen, a small town in the Saxony region of Germany famous for its great number of violin making workshops. The town was home to a great many fine bow making families at this time, including the Knopf and Pfretzschner dynasties.

The town remains active as a centre of violin making today, with over 100 different instrument workshops and a charming museum dedicated to its extraordinary history.

About the violin bow

This bow was made in Saxony around 1890 and is an example of the higher grade of output for the period: the chased silver mounts are indicative of high quality.

The round stick is of very good pernambuco and measures 726 mm in length. The mounts are ebony and chased silver.

The bow weighs 59 grams.

How does it play?

This is a bold, precise bow with lots of crispness and amazing projection. A really great bow!

Condition

The bow is in very good condition with an altered thumb projection.
