Violin bow by Garner Wilson, Dingwall, circa 2005
About Garner Wilson
Garner Wilson was born in 1944 and was one of the very last bowmakers to be trained in the Hill workshop. He joined the firm at the age of 16 and was trained by Arthur Bultitude and William Watson: his Hill numeral was number 12. Wilson left Hills in 1966, first setting up in Suffolk before moving to Dingwall in the Highlands.
Garner Wilson´s work can very much be seen as following on in the English Bultitude style: they are usually rather strong sticks and have large, bold heads. They are popular with players and represent a good opportunity to own a bow from the great twentieth-century English tradition for a more affordable price.
About the violin bow
This bow was made in Garner's Dingwall workshop around 2005.
The round stick measures 727 mm in length and is made of very good-quality pernambuco.
The bow weighs 60.5 grams and the mounts are of silver and ebony.
How does it play?
This bow works crisply off the string and produces a big, broad sound. The stick is strong and does a lot of the heavy lifting: perhaps not the right fit for long opera rehearsals!
Condition
The bow is in very good condition with some minor wear to the button.
