The Warrender cello
About our Warrender cellos
Ideal for the advancing cellist, this instrument was hand-made in a small, skilled workshop in China, where traditional techniques and careful wood selection are prioritised. We personally choose each cello for its tonal quality and structural integrity, then bring it to our Edinburgh workshop for a full setup.
Our luthiers make the bridge and post to our Head of Workshop's standards, and then adjust the fingerboard, nut, and pegs to optimize playability, comfort, and response, ensuring that the instrument meets the demands of serious study and performance. The result is a cello that supports expressive playing and inspires continued growth.
About the cello
This cello was made in China in 2024 and is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.
The cello has a two piece back of quarter sawn maple with ribs to match. The scroll is of plainer maple and the front is two pieces of wide grained spruce. The varnish is a shaded amber in colour.
The cello has a length of back of 759 mm with a vibrating string length of 687 mm.
How does it sound?
The cello has been set up with subtlety and colour in mind: although it has a great deal of power and projection, our aim is to give the player a broad and nuanced musical palette that allows for both expressive depth and technical versatility.
