Viola by Derick Sanderson, Alva, 1970

About Derick Sanderson

Derick Sanderson was a luthier based in Alva, Clackmannanshire. He was active for approximately 20 years, beginning in the mid-1960s, and passed away in 1988.

We have seen a number of Sanderson instruments in the shop, all of which were very well made.

About the viola

This viola was made in Alva in 1970 and is built on a personal model.

The viola has a one-piece back of quarter-sawn maple of horizontal flame. The ribs are of similar wood and the scroll is of plainer maple. The front is two pieces of very fine-grained spruce, and the varnish is pale gold in colour.

The viola has a length of back of 407 mm or 16 inches.

How does it sound?

This viola has a pleasantly textured lower register and plenty of power on the A string. The instrument is resonant and responsive, with an appealing contrast between the darker character of the lower strings and the clarity of the upper register.

Condition

The viola is in excellent original condition, with some superficial wear to the varnish.
