About David Newton

David Newton trained as a bow maker under Arthur Bultitude and Percival Bryant, two of the great names of twentieth-century English bow making. Newton worked in Potters Music Shop, Croydon, before setting up his own shop in Merstham in the 1970s.

The business continues to flourish under the leadership of Newton's daughter, Emma.

About the viola bow

This bow was made around 1990 and shows the influence of Newton's teacher, Arthur Bultitude, in model.

The octagonal stick is of relatively plain pernambuco and measures 729 mm in length. The mounts are of silver and ebony.

The bow weighs 66 grams.

How does it play?

This is a reliable bow that draws out a big sound. It works well off the string, and has a comforting sense of being both solid and yet manoeuvrable.

Condition

The bow is in excellent condition.
