Viola by David Collins, Abingdon, 1996
About David Collins
David Collins was an English luthier based in Abingdon in Oxfordshire.
Little biographical information about Collins is currently available, although surviving instruments establish his activity in Abingdon during the 1980s and 1990s. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who has more information about this maker!
About the viola
This viola was made in Abingdon in 1996 and is modelled after the 'Archinto' Stradivari of 1696.
The viola has a one-piece back of quarter-sawn maple, clearly selected for its similarities to the original instrument. The ribs and scroll are of similar wood, and the front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce. The varnish is a rich, unshaded amber-red in colour, and there is a small amount of antiquing in the lower bout of the back.
The viola has a length of back of 414 mm or 16 and 3/8ths.
How does it sound?
This is a hugely successful viola! It's big and expansive in sound, with a excellently calibrated balance of warmth and projection. It's even and easy to play, with great balance across the strings.
Condition
The viola is in very good condition.
