Violin bow by Claude Thomassin, Paris, circa 1920

Violin bow by Claude Thomassin, Paris, circa 1920

About Claude Auguste Thomassin

Claude Thomassin was born in Mirecourt in 1865. Unlike many of his Mirecourt contemporaries, he was not born into a family of instrument or bow makers: in fact, he came from a long line of saddle makers. The young Claude chose a different path, serving his apprenticeship as an archetier with the superb C. N. Bazin.

Thomassin moved to Paris around 1885 to work for the Gand and Bernardel firm, remaining until the company was taken over by Caressa & Français in 1901. That year, he set up his own Parisian workshop, making a great many bows branded in his own name whilst continuing to produce others for his former employers.
