Viola by Brian Rattray, Edinburgh, 1982

About Brian Rattray

Brian Rattray was a popular luthier who ran his workshop from the Edinburgh suburb of Colinton. Originally from Inverness, Rattray trained as an architect before making the move to a career as a luthier in 1979.

Rattray retired from the business in 2006, long before we moved to Edinburgh: it is a testament to his work and character that his name comes up with fondness in the shop all the time!

About the viola

This viola was made in Edinburgh in 1982 and is named 'Amphion'. It is built on a personal model.

The viola has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The two piece front is of spruce which varies in width, and the varnish is amber-brown in colour.

The viola has a length of back of 16 and 1/8th inches, or 410 mm.

How does it sound?

This viola has a open, singing tone which is very compelling. The A string in particular has the cantabile quality of a little cello.

Condition

The viola is in excellent condition and has remained in the hands of its original owner until the present day.
