Violin by Benjamin Banks, Salisbury, circa 1780

Violin by Benjamin Banks, Salisbury, circa 1780

About Benjamin Banks

Benjamin Banks was born in Salisbury in 1727 and is regarded as one of the finest English violin makers of the eighteenth century. He established his workshop in Salisbury in the 1750s, remaining there throughout his career and developing a distinctive and highly accomplished style of making.

Banks was strongly influenced by the work of the Amati family, whose elegant models can be seen in many of his finest instruments. His work is characterised by excellent craftsmanship, carefully chosen materials and particularly beautiful varnish, often of a rich golden-brown or reddish-brown colour.

Banks made violins, violas and cellos, though he is perhaps best known today for his cellos. The finest examples combine the refinement of the classical Italian tradition with a distinctly English character, and his instruments are now among the most highly prized works of the eighteenth-century English school.

About the violin

This violin was made in Salisbury circa 1780 and is Banks' familiar interpretation of the Amati model.

The violin has a length of back of 353 mm.

How does it sound?
