A violin for Beare and Son, Saxony, circa 1920

A violin for Beare and Son, Saxony, circa 1920

About Saxon violins

This violin was made in Markneukirchen, a small town in the Saxony region of Germany famous for its great number of violin making workshops. The town is less than 10km away from Luby, its Czech equivalent, leading to a great deal of crossover between the two towns.

The town remains active as a centre of violin making today, with over 100 different instrument workshops and a charming museum dedicated to its extraordinary history..

The violin is labelled Giuseppe Maravelli, one of the trade names for instruments made to be sold by the London firm John and Arthur Beare. The instruments were made in both France and Germany and were produced at various grades of quality. The name Beare is synonymous with high quality: most of the world’s top violins have been through the Beare workshop at some point in history!

About the violin

This violin was made in Saxony for the great London shop Beare and Son and the model shows the influence of the Venetian maker Santo Serafin.

The violin has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs to match. The scroll is of plainer maple and the front is two pieces of very fine-grained spruce. The varnish is a rich, unshaded brown in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 358 mm.

How does it sound?
