Baroque Violin Bow by Fornaciari Junior, Brazil, circa 2023

About Fornaciari Junior

This bow was made by Fornaciari Junior for L'archet Brasil, the leading bow company which commissions work from master makers in Brazil. The bows are all handmade by individual archetiers before being distributed by the firm all across the world. The company has developed an excellent reputation for its focus on sustainability: their work in developing excellent alternatives to pernambuco is of particular note.

These bows are selected by us in conjunction with our Head of Workshop. We assess the bows for both quality and playing characteristics, selecting the best for sale.

About the violin bow

This Baroque violin bow was made in Brazil. The stick is made of ironwood, a dense hardwood favoured by the early makers of the eighteenth century and still popular with more recent makers such as Pecatte.

The bow weighs 57 grams and measures 692 mm in length. The frog is ebony and the button is a synthetic material designed to imitate ivory without any of the associated restrictions. The design of the bow is most influenced by the French makers from around 1750.

How does it play?

We are always delighted to have ironwood bows available! Whilst generalisations are a dangerous game, ironwood bows tend to offer a wonderful clarity to the sound. This bow is no exception: the sound is brilliant and clear with lots of high overtones.

Condition

The bow is in original mint condition.
