Three-quarter size violin for Thomas Craig, Saxony, circa 1900

Three-quarter size violin for Thomas Craig, Saxony, circa 1900

About Thomas Craig

Thomas Craig was a violin maker and restorer based in Aberdeen who often imported instruments from Germany and France in the white and varnished them in his workshop. There are several other British makers who did this, usually to keep up with local demand.

About the violin

This violin was made in Saxony around 1900 and was then imported by Thomas Craig to sell in his Aberdeen shop.

The violin has a two-piece back of fairly plain maple, with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of relatively wide-grained spruce and the varnish is golden-brown in colour.

The violin has a length of back of 331 mm and a string length of 305 mm.

How does it sound?

This is a very successful little violin! We've set it up with Evah Pirazzi strings and think it will make a superb instrument for a talented young player.

Condition

The violin is in very good condition.
