Viola by Andrea Pontedoro, Edinburgh, 2004

About Andrea Pontedoro

The Italian violin maker Andrea Pontedoro spent 12 years living and working in Edinburgh before moving back to Trieste in 2012. Pontedoro began his studies in 1995 and went on to study in both Bologna and Florence before setting up his own violin workshop in Edinburgh.

About the viola

The viola was made in 2004 and has a length of back of 16 and 1/4 inches. It is a successful personal model.

The viola has a two piece back of book-matched maple, the flame descending from the centre joint. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce, narrow under the bridge and widening considerably towards the flanks. The varnish is a translucent golden-brown colour, laid over a lighter golden ground.

How does it sound?

This viola projects extremely well. The sound is on the darker end of the spectrum but has really excellent response. This viola would stand you in excellent stead for orchestral auditions due to its immediacy and ease of playing without any suggestion of a strident tone.

Condition

The viola is in excellent original condition.
