Violin for Alfred Moritz, Dresden, 1881

Violin for Alfred Moritz, Dresden, 1881

About Alfred Moritz

Alfred Moritz was a violin manufacturer and dealer working in Dresden in the late nineteenth century. His firm was active from around 1880 to 1900, producing instruments largely for the export trade.

Moritz violins were often supplied through retailers and agents, sometimes bearing labels naming the company for whom they had been made. The firm’s instruments were particularly well represented in Britain, where some were sold under the name “Excelsior”.

About the violin

This violin was made in Saxony and is modelled after the instruments of the Brescian maker Gasparo da Salò. It was made for the Alfred Moritz firm and is one of their 'Excelsior' model instruments.

The violin has a two-piece back of highly figured maple, with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of medium-grained spruce, and the varnish is an antiqued reddish-brown. The violin is decorated after the manner of the Brescian makers and has charming relief patterns on the scroll.

The violin has a length of back of 359 mm.

How does it sound?

This violin has a warm, creamy voice and is very even across the strings. There is a somewhat viola-like character to the sound, making it particularly enticing in melodic playing.

Condition

The violin is in excellent condition.
