Viola by Tay Boon Lay, Cremona, 1981

About Tay Boon Lay

Tay Boon Lay was born into a musical family in Singapore and studied the violin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She then went on to study violin making in Cremona and and base her workshop in the city. Alongside her career as a luthier, Tay Boon Lay worked for two decades as a professional violinist: instruments made by players are always particularly satisfying somehow!

About the viola

The viola is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari and was made in 1981. It has a one piece back of slab-cut maple and a two piece front of straight-grained spruce which widens towards the flanks. The varnish is a dark golden-brown colour.

The viola has a length of back of 16 inches.

How does it sound?

This viola is not for a shrinking violet: it is powerful, punchy and responsive, ideal for exploring the full range of the viola repertoire.
