About Neil Kristóf Értz
Neil Értz was a Scottish violin maker based in Edinburgh who sadly passed away in 2016. Neil was one of the foremost British luthiers and was widely respected for his making and restoration. His instruments are much prized for their fantastic tone and beauty.
Born in Scotland in 1966, Értz studied the violin and viola at St Mary´s Music School before going on to the Newark School of Violin Making. He then spent years gaining experience in some of Europe´s most respected workshops before setting up his own, firstly in Cambridge and then in Edinburgh from 2009 onwards.
Ertz violins are extremely popular: I´ve probably seen more of these in the hands of musicians than I have any other maker. They are instruments which have a good deal of character, both tonally and visually.
About the violin
This violin was made in 1992, during Neil’s time in France. It is modelled after the instruments of Stradivari.
The violin has a one piece back of attractively figured, slab-cut maple. The ribs and scroll are of matching wood. The front is two pieces of fine-grained spruce. The varnish is a vibrant amber colour and is unshaded.
The violin has a length of back of 355 mm.
How does it sound?
This is a gutsy violin! Though it projects extremely well, it is the warmth and quality of sound that the instrument seems to prioritise. It has a full and rich G string, a soaring E string and a perfectly balanced middle which bridges the gap well. There is a reason why Neil’s violins find themselves in the hands of so many professionals and this one is no exception!

The violin is in original mint condition.
