Viola by Antonio Lechi, Cremona, 1923
About Antonio Lechi
Antonio Lechi worked for Aristide Cavali in the Claudio Monteverdi workshop and also produced instruments under his own label. His instruments are amongst the most affordable of the Modern Italian school and tend to sound absolutely brilliant.
About this viola
This viola was made in Cremona and the label tells us that it's dated 1923. A relatively common tax dodge used by some Italian makers of the period means that it's not possible to be certain of this date!
The viola has a two piece back of quarter-sawn maple with ribs and scroll to match. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce and the varnish is the characteristic red colour which we associate with instruments of this school and period.
The viola has a length of back of 15 and a half inches or 394 mm.
How does it sound?
This viola has a rich and relaxed tenor voice. There is a definite chocolate quality to the tone and the instrument sings easily, filling the room without trying. A very human viola!
Condition
The viola is in excellent condition.
