About J.T.L. bows
The workshop of Jérôme Thibouville Lamy was based in Mirecourt and made a wide range of stringed instruments and bows. They were open for more than a century, closing their doors for the last time in 1969. The workshop was both large and prolific and examples of their work can be seen all around the world.
About the bow
This viola bow is the J.T.L. Sarasate Élève model: using the name of the violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate was a marketing ploy! It was made in Mirecourt around 1920.
The bow weighs 69 grams and the mounts are of nickel and ebony. The round stick measures 724 mm in length.
How does it play?
This is a lovely, indulgent bow which produces a warm, squidgy sound. It is very comfortable to use, making it an excellent partner for long orchestral rehearsals.
Condition
This bow is in good condition. It is stamped Sarasate Él. above the frog on the player side.
