Viola bow by Richard Grünke, Bubenreuth

Viola bow by Richard Grünke, Bubenreuth

About Richard Grünke

Richard Grünke was born in Poland and learnt his craft with the German maker Edwin Herrmann. He then worked for a number of different makers including H.R. Pfretzschner before setting up his own workshop, later joined by his two sons. He is now known as one of the most important German bow makers of the twentieth century as makers are defined by the country in which they worked as opposed to their country of origin.

About the bow

Being gold mounted, this is one of the finer bows of Grünke´s output: this material was reserved for the very best pernambuco. The bow weighs 73 grams and the stick measures 743 mm in length. The mounts are of rose gold and ebony.

How does it play?

This is a strong, gutsy stick: perhaps not the ideal choice for a shy player but a fantastic tool for someone who wants more power. We are delighted to have a matching violin bow for sale: could this be the ideal toolkit for a player who regularly swaps between instruments?!

Condition

The bow is in completely mint condition. It is stamped Richard Grünke above the frog on the player side and the frog bears his brand.
