Viola bow by Garner Wilson, Dingwall

Viola bow by Garner Wilson, Dingwall

About Garner Wilson

Garner Wilson was born in 1944 and was one of the very last bowmakers to be trained in the Hill workshop. He joined the firm aged 16 and was trained by Arthur Bultitude and William Watson: his Hill numeral was number 12. Wilson left Hills in 1966, first setting up in Suffolk before moving to Dingwall in the Highlands.

Garner Wilson´s work can very much be seen as following on in the English Bultitude style: they are usually rather strong sticks and have large, bold heads. They are popular with players and represent a good opportunity to own a bow from the great twentieth century English tradition for a more affordable price.

About the bow

The bow weighs 76 grams and the octagonal stick measures 729 mm in length. The mounts are silver and ebony and the pernambuco is of exceptional quality.

How does it play?

This is a brilliant viola bow! It sits wrapped right around the string as though it’s a very soft stick, however it has loads of resistance there when you need it. The bow draws out an enormous sound and is happy to come off the string without being splashy or uncontrolled.

Condition

The bow is in original mint condition.
