Viola bow by Johannes Siegfried Finkel, Brienz, circa 2010
About J. S. Finkel
The Finkel family of Markneukirchen has long been associated with fine bows. The story starts with Ewald Weidhaas and his son Paul, both master bowmakers in the town. Paul's daughter Hanna married her father's apprentice, Siegfried Finkel, and the couple moved from Markneukirchen to Switzerland in 1952, along with their son Johannes Siegfried.
Johannes trained with his father, moving to the firm J. & A. Beare in London after his apprenticeship. He also worked for Hans Weisshaar in L.A. and for Moennig & Son in Philadelphia before returning to work alsongside his father in Brienz. Johannes took over the workshop in 1984, training up his daughter Daniela to represent the fifth generation of bowmakers in the family.
