Viola by Colin Cross, Deal, 2019

About Colin Cross

Colin Cross graduated from the Newark School of Violin Making with Distinction in 1989. He is highly respected for his extensive experience in restoration and repair work and his instruments enjoy an excellent reputation among professional players. Having run shops in both Buxton and Deal, Colin has recently moved to Scotland. We are delighted that he has joined us north of the border!

About the viola

The viola was made in Deal in 2019 and is modelled after the instruments of the early Brescian maker Giovanni Paolo Maggini.

The viola has a one piece back of English sycamore with ribs and scroll of similar wood. The front is two pieces of straight-grained spruce which widen towards the flanks. The varnish is a rich reddish brown, laid over a lighter golden ground.

The viola has a length of back of 15 and 3/8 inches or 391 mm.

How does it sound?

This is a full, rich viola which is utterly even across the strings. It's very unusual to have a small viola which offers the same richness on both the A and C strings: this instrument sings brilliantly across the full range!

Condition

The viola is in original mint condition.
