About the viola

This viola was made in 2020 and is modelled after instruments by the eighteenth century Venetian maker Domenico Busan. The violist Michael Tree famously played on a large-pattern Busan: this instrument is based on his small viola pattern.

The back and ribs are of willow, the same choice of wood as the instrument after which this viola is modelled. The front is of relatively wide-grained spruce and the varnish is a rich, Venetian red.

Although the viola has a satisfyingly broad outline and a generous arch, the length of back is relatively small at 15 and 3/8 inches or 391 cm.

How does it sound?

Don´t let the relatively small length of back fool you! This viola has a fairly long string length, giving it masses of sound and colour. The viola possesses a fantastic combination of warmth and directness, making it great fun to play. It would make an excellent partner for solo repertoire but also has all of the power necessary to lead an orchestral section. Tonally and visually, this is a strikingly beautiful instrument!

Condition

The viola is in original mint condition.
