About Saxon violin bows
This violin bow was made in Markneukirchen, a small town in the Saxony region of Germany famous for its great number of violin making workshops. The town was home to a great many fine bow making families at this time, including the Knopf and Pfretzschner dynasties.
The town remains active as a centre of violin making today, with over 100 different instrument workshops and a charming museum dedicated to its extraordinary history.
About the violin bow
This violin bow was made in Saxony around 1890 and is stamped Dodd. A great number of these copy bows exist, often of very high quality.
The round stick measures 723 mm in length and the mounts are of silver and ebony. In addition to the stick, the frog also bears a Dodd brand.
The bow weighs 57 grams.
How does it play?
This is a bow which is on the lighter side of things, yet brings out an amazing sound in the lower register. It would be perfect for someone wanting an interesting musical partner which will prompt you to explore new ideas!
Condition
The bow is in excellent condition with an original wedge adjacent to the faceplate.
